Pentavox Fenugreek Capsules

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes (known as Madhumeha in Ayurveda) is spreading its wings like an epidemic. As per a WHO data, there were 171 million Diabetes patients in the world in the year 2000 and this figure is estimated to exceed 366 millions by 2030. In India alone, there were 37.1 million Diabetes patients in 2000 and this figure can exceed 80 million by 2030.
DIABETES & AYURVEDA: Diabetes is a metabolic
disorder. According to Ayurveda, due to various causative
factors, all the three doshas (Vata, Pitta & Kapha), specially Kapha dosha get
vitiated to desecrate Meda & Sweda channels due to which the metabolic fire gets
Phlegmatic & feeble. This results in impaired & emaciated performance of
Pancreas because of which, the secretion of insulin also gets reduced & impaired
and Sugar obtained from foods does not gets converted into essential Energy for
the body. This sugar gets collected in blood & excreted through urine and this
stage is known as Madhumeha or Diabetes in Ayurveda.
Since the Vedic civilization, Ayurvedic physicians knew about Madhumeha
(Diabetes), as one of the other different types of Prameha. Madhumeha has been
termed as Maharoga (mighty disease) as its effect reaches in almost all parts of
the body and their functioning. Ayurveda not only describes it just as passing of
sugar with urine but effect of Diabetes has been explained with complications of
five sheaths (Food sheath, Energy sheath, Mind sheath, Intellectual sheath and
Bliss sheath) of the body.
Besides the common symptoms of Diabetes in the beginning like Frequent
urination, Dry mouth & Excessive thirst, Extreme hunger, Unusual weight loss,
Increased fatigue, Irritability, Blurry vision, Cuts or sores that are slow to heal,
Itchy skin, yeast infections, Increased thirst, Leg pain there may be a number of
complications arising if Diabetes is ignored or handled carelessly. Such
complications are Nephropathy (damage to the kidneys or kidney failure),
Neuropathy (damage to the nerves like stroke & neuritis), Retinopathy (damage
to retina, the light-sensitive membrane at the back of the eyes)& Cataract,
Delayed or no healing of wounds, Diabetic Feet, Sexual problems & even
Impotence. These complications can also have damaging effects on the mother as
well as the child during Pregnancy.
Till date there is no permanent cure from Diabetes in any system of medicine. In
Ayurveda also Diabetes has been termed as Asadhya (incurable), but lots of
herbs & remedies have been described for its prevention & control. The use of
Fenugreek is of prime reverence for the management & control of Glucose levels
in Diabetes. Owing to the excellent properties of Fenugreek described in Ancient
Ayurvedic texts, the modern scientists have also concluded that there are number
of active principles in Fenugreek like Amino Acids, Antioxidants & Saponins
present in Fenugreek seeds that help to control glucose & cholesterol levels in the
body.
FENUGREEK: The awareness & craze about Fenugreek as a Natural home
remedy for the management & control of Diabetes is although increasing amongst
the people yet most patients have a false assumption that eating Fenugreek
seeds or leaves as a vegetable will help them. Moreoever, because of lack of
knowledge, consumers & even normal grocers are not aware that there are two
species of Fenugreek, one is Trigonella corniculata (known as Methe in Hindi), is a
cultivated variety and the seeds of which is upto 4 mm in size and is mainly used
as a flavouring agent & taste builder in Foods & Pickles. The right species is
Trigonella foenum-graecum (known as Methi in Hindi), is a wild variety (although
now cultivated also at very few places) the seeds of which are of 1-2 mm size and
its leaves are also used as a vegetable in Indian households. The seeds of
Trigonella foenum-graecum are the ones that contain various active principles for
use as a medicine in Ayurveda.
FENUGREEK IN DIABETES: Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) has been
elaborated in Ayurveda as an esteemed medicine for Madhumeha (Diabetes) as
well as for various other problems. According to Ayurveda, because of their
Snigdha (unctuous) & ushnaveeryam (warm potency), Methi (Fenugreek) seeds
are helpful in balancing vitiated Pitta & Kapha doshas and pacifying vitiated Vata
dosha. Being metabolic fire stimulant, Vata suppressant & Appetite stimulant in
nature, Fenugreek stimulates the pancreas to normalise insulin secretion and
digestive system for an effective control of Glucose & Cholesterol levels in the
body. Modern scientific studies reveal that adding Methi (Fenugreek) to the diet
normalises fasting blood sugar and improves after meal glucose levels. The
studies also reveal that there is significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL
(bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels, without reducing HDL (good) cholesterol
levels.

SUGGESTIVE DIETARY REGIME FOR DIABETES MANAGEMENT:
Avoid excess intake of sweets, carbohydrates, and dairy products. Take more
fresh vegetables and bitter herbs. Other useful foods include: roasted or fried
barley, corn flour, light, bitter vegetables, barley porridge, rice used after
frying, and herbs like cardamom, fenugreek, or coriander, mixed with honey.
Barley is the main food to heal urinary diseases.
Eliminate all objects that contain sugar from diet, like wheat, rice, potato,
sugar, sugar cane and its juice, sweet fruits. Reduce fats, especially butter
and ghee from diet.
To control kapha in the body, eliminate sugar from diet. In Ayurveda, small
amounts of honey are considered anti-kapha and fat melting. Use up to 2 or 3
teaspoons of raw, uncooked honey per day; cooked honey creates toxins in
the body.
Low-fat, high-fiber vegetarian foods form the basis of any Ayurvedic diet. These
foods also happen to be ideal for an anti-kapha, anti-diabetic diet, according. Eat
mostly complex carbohydrates, which digest slowly over many hours and don’t
cause a drastic jump in blood sugar. Beans, legumes, tubers and root vegetables
like turnips are best for balancing blood sugar. Whole, unrefined grains,
particularly millet, barley and buckwheat, break down more quickly but are also
staples of the Ayurvedic diet. Minimize intake of wheat, including whole wheat,
because wheat has cooling properties, which increases kapha.
A number of foods available in the typical Western diet can contribute to blood-
sugar imbalances or increase in kapha. Avoid eating highly processed foods such
as white-flour products including bread and pasta and sugary, fatty foods such as
pastries, candy and ice cream. Reduce or eliminate red meat and dairy foods,
particularly creamy and hard cheeses, from your diet. Chicken and fish are fine to
be eaten in small portions.
